| everytime i see a documentary about WWII on the history channel, i wonder if i'll see my grandpa in any of the footage shown. the documentary on right now is the exact place and year that my grandpa was fighting in. there's so many troops they show .. i can't help but wonder if grandpa is one of those men. | |

| the history channel is so interesting...I know I sound like a nerd but it's fun to re-learn what you should have paid better attention to in school. Carrie, he very well could be in some of those films!!

| We watch that channel here a lot too. My husband's cousin is R. L. Ermey (think Full Metal Jacket, Mail Call, etc...) and he likes to listen to him LOL!
When I was in my early teens, my great grandfather would tell me stories about the war and what his part was in it. I was too young and too consumed with being boy crazy to full pay attention and now I fully regret it. I wish I had taken the time to listen and remember everything he said to me.

| That would be amazing to find out. Anyway of finding out what unit he was in and maybe there is a list of the units in the documentary. They are usually really good about have the history documented. It may take a bit of work, I sure bet it would be worth knowing. | |

| sue, that's exactly what i think when i watch that channel ... why didn't i listen more in history class ... i love it now!
joyce ... we do know the unit he was in ... we've got a bunch of official papers. that'd be cool to find out for sure.
grandpa never talked about his time in WW11 until he was over 80 years old. and he refused to watch anything related to the war. he knew i loved sitting for hours and looking through he and my grandma's photo albums. when he was diagnosed with cancer in 2000 he asked me if i would like to copy pictures from their albums. at that time he pulled out an album i had never seen out before. it was his war album. he told me a few things about his war days ....
i found out quickly why he had never talked about the war. he witnessed his best buddy blow up by a land mine. he was the one who had to call his buddy's wife and deliver the folded flag to her.
grandpa passed away in 2003. i now have the beautiful stand up wardrobe that use to house his uniform and war paperwork.

| When I was in middle school, we had to do a report on someone we admired. I did it over my grandfather who was also in WWII. He brought me tons of photos, letters, and he even took me to a reunion of his shipmates. Even at that age, I was so fascinated by their stories.

Carrie - I can't imagine the things that soldiers have went through. I hate that your grandfather witnessed that. Bless his heart.

Bless his heart. when he told me those stories i was amazed for several reasons ... but the biggest thing that stood out to me was how well adjusted and strong and steady my grandpa was, inspite of all he went through in the war. you never would have guessed that he had experienced such horribel things. i don't know how he did it, but he "let go" of all tha stuff when he got back to the states. i think maybe it was his faith that made the difference.
