| we usually have several fires here in the summer, but it still seems so crazy to watch the news scroll at the bottom of the TV saying, 200 acres burned, 0% contained, and then 400, 600, 970, etc. and you can see the smoke from your house.
The High Park fire (north of us) has already claimed 189 homes and 60,000 acres and is 50% contained, and the Springer fire to the west of us has grown over 1,000 acres in two days, and is only 10% contained.
I actually heard the Springer fire was started by someone shooting at a propane tank. I hope that isn't true. How dumb would that be?????

yes, the High Park Fire was caused by lightning-not much you can do about that. I think the fire started around the 9th, so it has been burning quite a while now.

| the fires are actually pretty far away from us-about 1 1/2 hrs. north, and 1 hr. west. they don't actually seem real until you look at the smoke or read the news. | |

| Just seems unreal to me the size and extent of damage these wildfires can cause, seeing as how I have never seen a true wildfire. I have a huge respect for fire and firemen seeing as how my daddy was a firemen back in his younger days. Its is a thankless job and very stressfull.
I think that is why I am now a pyromaniac. Whenever we have or go somewhere with a bonfire or any type of fire for that matter, I have to take charge and be in control of it. Thankfully my DH doesn't mind!!

| well, I might have spoken too soon about the fires being far away. We have a new fire today, and it is right on the western edge of town. it is a fast-burning fire (150 acres so far), and they have already started evacuating Garden of the Gods, and quite a bit of the surrounding area. | |

| goodness-what a fire! they say it is close to 2,500 acres now, and other little fires are popping up as well. they have evacuated over 11,000 people so far. they have declared it a disaster area, and the military is being called in. wow. | |

| at least the Springer fire is out now further west up the mountain. it really WAS started by someone shooting at a propane tank-crazy!!!!
they are in the process of closing a park down the street from us because so many people are going to the park (it is a very LARGE park) to look at the fire burning across town. they say the fire danger is so high here, that the more people gathered together, the more likely a spark could start a fire, etc., and they are urging people to stay in their homes. so crazy.
a new fire started about 45 minutes northeast of us as well, and they have already evacuated the small town in that area.
9 fires burning in CO right now.

| would love some rain-they say none in the forecast, and record temps the next few days. good news though-they are lifting some of the evacuations! another fire started today as well, bringing the total to 10. tomorrow, the military planes will be in action though-they are allocating 4 out of the 8 specialized planes in the US to us, and they are just getting ready-2 are based here, and 2 out of Wyoming. I am sure they will make a huge difference! | |

| it is kind of weird here today. it was sunny, but if you looked towards the mountains, it looked like it was almost night.
and, it is very quiet here-unusually so. I think most people are either staying inside, or are at places with air conditioning.

| I just realized that you may be stationed at the same place my sister was about 18 years ago...Fort Carson? We visited with her when my nephew was born and visiting the Garden of the Gods. I also have friends stationed there now and they have been posting about the fires...Micah and Amanda Mayo. Praying they get all of the fires contained soon. It's scary!! | |

| It is extremely dry here in Ohio and they actually have put out a "special weather statement" cautioning people about burning trash or anything outside because of how dry it is and the risk of fires getting out of control. No rain in the forcast for us either. And its suppose to be in the mid to upper 90's for the next week or so.
I'm beginning to wonder about the weather. I told my husband the other night if I wanted to have 100 temp days then I would live in Arizona. Not suppose to be having this kind of weather here in Ohio.

I know the records Sat.-Mon. were 95, and we hit 100 each day. Crazy!

| I don't blame you Elisha!
I think we are going to try to get out of the house this afternoon when it is super hot and hit up some air conditioning. I haven't wanted to take the kids out because they are still small and the smoke in the air has been quite strong, but now that the fires have started moving north and west, it has lightened up some. Still can't leave the windows open without getting burning eyes and throat after a bit, but I think today is good enough to get out. I think we are going stir crazy!!!!
