| What kind of book is it? Mystery? I've heard about it just not sure what kind of reading it would be. | |

| I finally got these from the library-very interesting plot, and very well written! Totally enjoyable reads! I read each of the first two within a couple of days, and am still waiting on the third. I think there are only 30 more people ahead of me, so hopefully soon. | |

they are considered sci fi i think. There is a futuristic nature to the books.

| That's what I've always thought Dria. Everyone is talking about these books and how good they are but I just don't know if I'd like them. I am not a sci-fi, thriller fan. | |

I am not into sci-fi or thrillers either. I like a little mystery--James Patterson (love his Alex Cross and Mike Bennett characters.) and I adore a sweet romantic novel-- with a happy ending. Hunger games looks like too much sadness for me.

| It's not sci fi like you think. It's just about the future or what the future could be like, that's all.
Here is a synopsis ( I might be off on a few things but should be close, LOL)....Panem is the country...it's ike the US in many many years. There is a Capitol and they run everything. The ppl in the Capitol are very "fantastic" pink hair, plastic surgery ...that kind of thing so that is kinda sci fi.
The rest of the country is divided into 11 or 12 "areas". Each of these areas does something. Grow grain, mine, cattle...some kind of resource that goes back to the Capitol. The areas are very poor so they rebelled and lost and it is post/apocalyptic (again sci fi in nature). So to remind them of their treachery, the Capitol/President makes every child from the age of 12 to 17 put their name in a "hat" and a boy and girl are picked from each area to fight to the death in an arena while everyone in Panem watches on a big TV in their areas. For some areas it is an honor to be chosen. It's like survivor to the death but they are children.
It's messed up. Made me sick to my stomach, bawled my eyes out in the first book. It truly is a story of the battle of good and evil and the possibility that one day it could very well happen. Of course there is a love triangle that makes the whole story more intense.
So it's not sci fi like Battlestar Galactica or Star Trek. It is very different but do to the futuristic nature of the story line and the fact that the people in the Capitol do plastic surgery to make their skin purple is what puts it in that category. The girl that is the main category is an expert marksmen with a bow and arrow so there are some very humbling aspects to it. The idea that if we had to fend four ourselves in life or death could we really do it?
That is my take...definitely worth it. It's NOTHING like Twilight. There is meaning and symbolism and a real story line. It's intense. Worth it for sure!
If you have a Nook I can lend it to you.

| It's almost hard to put into any category. I will say it is VERY well-written, and worth the read!!!! AND, I finally made it to the library this morning-book 3 for me today! Yay!!! | |

| It is very well written And really sad and messed up at times...but a really really good story. I'm nervous about it being on screen -- I'm hoping that its not overwhelmingly sad. :/ | |

| Ellen--thanks for the synopsis... I didn't get the "farming/food" part from the movie sneak. the movie sneak made it look more like a twisted gladiator movie where children were the fighters... so I guess that is a small part of it. I thin kI would get attached to the kids in the book then not be able to sleep! | |

SEE!!! I'm really not a "stick in the mud" the plot and plight of the kids is a horror. Taylor Swift's new music video is the song she did for the movie..Have you seen this... Taylor hunger games song/video Safe and Sound

| I was like that, too, Dria. When my friend told me that I was like, "i can't read that" but I did and it was awesome. I cried and cried. I know the one part in the first games ...gosh I yelled out loud and cried...tearing up now actually.
I am sure you guys know what I am talking about with the flowers ...don't want to ruin it for everyone. I am def bringing tissues lol!
I think I am going by myself, too. Unless we take the kids to brian's parents but not sure. I am going to look like a freak crying and talking to myself.
